General Bar Liquor Licence

A general bar liquor licence is a sub-type of the hotel liquor licence.

Although there are many similarities with the hotel liquor licence, there are two important differences:

  • gaming machines, keno and other betting must not be operated or kept on the premises

  • alcohol must only be sold for consumption on the premises (ie no takeaway sales)

What does a general bar licence permit?

Much like a hotel liquor licence, a general bar allows for the operation of dining facilities, accommodation services and entertainment.

Liquor may also be sold at functions away from the premises.

What kinds of businesses use general bar licences?

The general bar liquor licence is suitable for any business where the primary purpose is the sale and supply of liquor on premises, provided no gaming facilities are required.

Businesses such as large bars (over 120 patrons), pubs and accommodation hotels will often use this licence type.

Why use a general bar licence instead of a hotel licence or small bar?

A general bar licence is much less expensive than a hotel licence and provided your business does not require gaming or take away liquor sales, represents a very cost effective option as most other benefits of a hotel licence are preserved.

A general bar licence will be preferable to a small bar licence if the patron capacity is over 120 or the business intends to provide accommodation services or sell liquor at functions away from the premises.

Minors are permitted in certain circumstances

Generally, minors are permitted to enter and remain on areas within a hotel liquor licence, provided a minors area authorisation is in effect and the minor is in the company of a responsible adult.
